Disc Herniation

What is a herniated disc?

A herniated disc occurs when there is damage to the outer layer of cartilage of a disc in the spine and the inner layer of the disc is protruding out of the tear, compressing the surrounding nerves. This can result in nerve pain and other difficulties.

What are the symptoms of a herniated disc?

  • Arm or leg pain. If the herniated disc is in your lower back, you may feel pain in your buttocks, thighs, calves and even feet. If the herniated disc is in your neck, you may feel pain in your shoulders or arms.

  • Numbness or tingling. Disc herniation often causes radiating numbness or tingling in the body part served by the nerves that are affected by the herniation.

  • Weakness. The muscles served by the nerves affected by the herniation may weaken. This can cause stumbling, or affect your ability to hold or lift things.

How can chiropractic help with disc herniation?

Chiropractic can help alleviate the pain associated with a herniated disc. A chiropractor will look at your spine’s alignment and correct any imbalances. These corrections can help take the pressure off a herniated disc, allowing the body to relax and heal the herniation. Chiropractic care may allow the body to heal a herniated disc naturally, avoiding surgery to correct the issue. Are you ready to heal your pain? Schedule an appointment today.
